Quote Of The Day: Create A Relationship With Yourself

Quote: Steve Maraboli

Rather than dwelling solely on relationships with others, why don’t you focus on creating a relationship with yourself?
Take a little time out to discover yourself, understand your purpose and what you stand for.
Start a relationship with yourself, like you’d do with a lover. It may sound crazy but when the chips are down and you’re alone all you’ve got in the end is no one but yourself. Think about it.

  1. Very true. A lot of relationship improvement tips can be applied with oneself too. E.g. Are you being a good listener and understanding of yourself or pushing too hard and being critical?

What advice would you give to someone who wanted to understand and improve this relationship?

  2. I appreciate your words, Matters of Living.
On my advice on how to improve self relationship…
1). I’d say the first thing is to identity your strengths and weaknesses. Understand that as a person, it’s OKAY for you to be good in one thing and not so good in another, don’t fret, it’s how you’re wired. You don’t have to feel sorry for it.

2). You’d have to drop the perfectionist attitude. If you keep taunting and criticizing yourself on things you can’t achieve at some point, you’d slowly be treading the path of self pity, depression and emotional instability.

3). Take it one step at a time, do the things you love; whatever makes you happy.

4). Own your happiness, don’t allow people’s poisonous actions, reactions or perception of you ruin your happineas. Knowing this would give you peace all the time and set the foundation for the love you plan to show yourself.

5). Spoil yourself like you would do to a lover; this improves not just your self-relationship, but relationships with others.

6). Maintain a balance, while you’re trying to be the best you can be by going after your dreams and ambitions avoid drifting to the other side of the spectrum which constantly puts you on the sad and the ‘oh-I’m-not-good-enough’ scale. It’s detrimental to your physical, mental and emotional health.

7). Forgive completely without holding back. I’m still struggling with this and I’ve been discovering different parts of me I never knew about.(I’d do an elaborate post on this)

8). Finally, dwell on your positive memories; they reveal so much things about you and if you must dwell on the negative memories, let it be for unbiased evaluation; on how you can be a better version of you.

I do hope this is helpful enough. Cheers!
